At a press conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on August 22, 2014, Las Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo joyfully announce that a baby kidnapped during the Dirty War, and whose parents were murdered, was found.
When Koff was eighteen years old, her father gave her a book that set her on the path to forensic anthropology. The book was called Witnesses from the Grave: The Stories Bones Tell, which relates the story of Clyde Snow and the Argentine Forensic Anthropology team.
When the president of the African nation of Rwanda was killed in a plane crash in 1994, members of the ruling Hutu party launched an all-out, wellplanned slaughter of the minority Tutsi people and Hutus who opposed the campaign. Although the two tribes had lived side by side and shared a common culture for centuries, tensions between the two populations had worsened in recent years. Goaded on by the governing party and driven by fear, soldiers and civilians alike massacred their Tutsi neighbors. Almost one million Tutsis, as well as Hutus who opposed the campaign, had been killed.
Koff was in graduate school and studying forensic anthropology when she watched the news reports on television. âWhoâs going to go over there and identify all those bodies?â she asked herself.5 Less than two years later, she joined a United Nations team of archaeologists, anthropologists, pathologists, and others to do just that. The goal was to identify the bodies. It was done to document that the victims had been murdered so that prosecutors could bring those responsible to trial.
